BBN Internet Design Notes, 1981-1984

The Internet Design Notes (IDNs) were a sequence of internal BBN notes. According to Bob Hinden, the IDNs were part of BBN's Butterfly Gateway project, an effort to replace the PDP-11 based gateways with gateways based on the Butterfly Multiprocessor; and they were deployed in various places including the gateways between the Arpanet and Milnet.

Kathy Kerby collected the notes listed below for her own edification. Rather than discarding the notes in 2018, she passed her notebook containing the notes to Dave Walden for him to scan.

The notes included some critique of existing protocols and discussed some of the work being done for the Butterfly project. Kathy thinks some of these notes evolved into Internet Engineering Notes or RFCs.
