The sand bars and shallow water are a feasting place for birds. There are large numbers of sand insects, little fish and translucent sandshrimp between 1/2 inch and 2 inches long. They hide under the sand, quickly dart across a short expanse of water and in the blink of an eye bury themselves in the sand. There are also bigger fish and eels in the slightly deeper water of the main stream bed.
