I don't like to compare books
and movies (I often read a book after having seen the movie and usually
think the movie was better. In this case, however, the movie was a
little disappointing because there is so much less of the relationship
between Patrick and Angela and essentially nothing of the relationship
with Bubba Rugowski. On the other hand, the screenplay and actors do a
good job of keeping the complex plot moving and understandable as it
plays out. And there is definitely a Boston look and feel to things.
Regarding the recent “Boston crime trilogy,” I think this film is
about as good as Mystic River, and The Departed is significantly
better than the other two.
