Nelly survived a WWII concentration-and-death camp, gets reconstructive surgery her face needs from disfiguring injuries suffered in the camp, and heads back to Berlin to find her husband. Her husband doesn't recognize her, but she looks enough like her old self that he proposes to use her to pretend to be Nelly in order to get his hands on Nelly's inheritance from all of the rest of her Jewish family dying during the Holocaust. Johnny is so fixated on his plan and his conclusion that Nelly is dead that he determinedly ignores all the clues that Nelly is Nelly.
