Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg
Rating = B-
I never heard of
Gertrude Berg before this documentary movie. She was off TV before
my family got its first TV set in the late 1950s, and I never heard
of her on the radio. Perhaps the Jewish mother in New York City was
not so relevant to my suburban west coast family? I'm glad I saw the
documentary movie. She was an amazing woman who played an important
role in radio and TV history. Still, the documentary never really
grabbed me that way the director's documentary on Jewish baseball
player Hank Greenberg grabbed me. I think the documentary is
competently made, in general, pulling the story together from many
sources. But the “dark” side Mrs. Berg's history youth and life is
not well explained.
