Thus, eventually, the watery area behind the barrier dune becomes a dense spongy salt marsh. The upward growth of the spartina in time gives sharp definition to the creeks which were originally just natural meanderings of water on the low area behind the dune. The creeks provide for the necessary flow of water into the marsh and are deep enough to remain free of spartina.
