Snails are also found clustered together on the packed mud bank. This species is called Littorina Littorea, but most people know them as periwinkles. They are essentially salt water animals which have plate called an operculum, which they can draw into the opening of their shells to seal themselves against drying during low tide periods. By sealing themselves this way they are able survive out of water for many days.
