These ditches an attempt
to drain standing pools of water in which mosquito larvae grew.
According to Ike and Ike and Benny (the two Cape Cod Mosquito Control
officers who we saw visit the marsh beside our house a couple of times
a year for many years), specially-built light-weight ditching machines were used to
dig the ditches. As recently as about 2000, Ike and Benny cleared
spartina grass out of one of the ditches using hand shovels to keep
that ditch open to the pool of water closer to the uplands.
Apparently these ditches have not made much difference to the
mosquito population.
