At low tide, fresh water flows downstream in the higher marsh stream beds which at the highest tides are filled with salt water. This washed out old dam, near Murkwood conservation land , a few hundred feet from Route 6A, was probably an attempt to keep the salt from the lower marsh from mingling with the fresh water of the higher marsh.
